Every day things

Posted on Monday, September 15, 2008 by Douglas Powell

How nice is it to lie down for a good nights sleep after a long day; to rest well and be recharged for the coming tasks of the new day. In the midst of your sleeping soundly, you need to turn from one side to the other. What do you do? After a restful nights sleep, you wake up and need to sit up so as to start your day. What do you do? You’re in the shower and you need to wash your feet. What do you do? Well if you are healthy, strong and flexible, all of these things are every day things that you do without a second thought. However what if you have some condition, which limits your ability to do these things easily, then, what do you do?

First you assess what your current physical condition is. Have you had any illnesses or injuries that have affected your ability to function normally? Ever sprain or strain a muscle participating in any sport? Ever slip and fall awkwardly? Ever been in an automobile accident? These kinds of things can cause small changes in the way your body moves, and over time those changes can create muscle imbalances, which lead to over use of some muscles and under use of others. The overused muscles become stronger while the underused become weaker. The evidence of this shows up when you participate in something that requires a balance of strength, using both sides of your body for an extended period of time. One side will weaken and give in to the stress of the task before the other side.

Can you turn from side to side while lying down? Can you sit up from a lying position? Are your abdominal muscles and core strength sufficient to allow you to turn or sit up easily and without pain? Is your lower back strong and flexible? Bending to your feet or bringing your feet to your hands requires flexibility and strength. Did you know that you are only as strong as your weakest muscles? If you bend or move in a particular way and at some point in that movement you pause due to pain or weakness, then this is an area you need to strengthen. No matter how strong the other muscles are, when you are in that particular position you are only as strong as that weaker muscle.

So much of our lives involve adapting to the present moments situation. Simple movements, complex movements, a fall, an accident or injury, a virus of some kind of, all these things cause our bodies to adapt to that present moment stress to be able to accomplish a particular task. Talk to any mentally or physically impaired person, anyone recovering from an automobile accident, or retired athlete from any sport and I am certain they will have some story of overcoming and adapting to life anew from that point. Our bodies are designed to serve us and if they are unable to do this in the “usual” way, they will find another way. I am reminded of a story on television years ago about a boy that walked on his hands and feet. He physically could not stand up strait because his body developed differently, yet he adapted and was able to take care of himself.

.

Our bodies are wonderful creations, which allow us to do marvelous things. We need to understand our bodies, and create the best environment for them to do for us all that we want them to do. Being healthy is a choice, and a privilege. We are all aware that not everyone can sit up, stand up, and bend without issue, so taking time daily to insure your body is healthy flexible and strong is your responsibility. Take it seriously and be diligent with your maintenance and enjoy the benefits of being fit. Life is so much sweeter when doing every day things are easy.

Give yourself the best opportunity to have a healthy, happy, successful life by being in the best possible health. Take control of your destiny

Love the skin your in

Posted on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 by Douglas Powell

Did you know that your skin is just a bunch of cells? If you want to take care of your skin, and have it look and feel its best, you must take care of its cells. Healthy, vibrant cells need plenty of fluid to thrive. Guess what that fluid is made of, that's right, water. In order for your body to have the proper amount of fluid for your cells to function effectively, you must put this water into your body.

When we think of cells, you might say we view them as Gulliver viewed the Lilliputians. These living, metabolizing organisms are microscopic, so we treat them as out of sight, out of mind. Well if you want healthier skin and a healthier body, then it’s time to change the way you think and view yourselves.

Cells, just like us, require fuel or energy, to do their job. In the process of doing their respective jobs, they experience damage which needs repair. That repair comes from protein - the building blocks of life. Once that fuel is used, waste is produced - which is removed from your body via our trips to the bathroom. Remember, for these cells to operate effectively, they need to be in a sufficient fluid base.

Some other things that affect our skin are direct sunlight, temperature and moisture. We can protect our skin from sunlight by covering it, cooling and warming it with clothing, as well. Dry skin can be moisturized naturally by eating vegetables or with oils and lotions.

Remember even though you cannot see these cells with your eyes, they are there and need your attention. Take every opportunity to drink water, and eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Protect your skin when necessary. Moisturize regularly and enjoy that skin you are in.

As always, stay positive and control your thoughts - because your thoughts become your reality.

Take a bite out of pain

Posted on Tuesday, July 1, 2008 by Douglas Powell

When your body is experiencing pain, try eating your way out of it. Sounds a little unusual, however it works. Joint pain - like ankle, knee, hip, back, or shoulder; or nerve pain - like a headache, toothache or any constant dull pain, are very common and you can eat your way out of them.

What is pain? Well it is a message from a part of your body to your brain that something is out of its normal state. This message causes many things to happen and your body begins to repair what is wrong.

What modern medicine does is block this message to the brain so you don't feel any pain; then with the aid of additional medicine, your body goes to work to fix the abnormal state. When this goes on, it's like a battle to the death between good and evil. Let me draw a picture for you.

Let's say you are in a crowded room with many people, and some of them are coughing, sneezing and looking weak and lacking in energy. In a short while you notice that you too are feeling a little weak and lacking in energy. Well the likelihood that your body was exposed to some air born germs is high; and now your body has to go to battle to return you to normal, good health. If you resort to modern medicine, what you are doing is going into battle against an army of potentially millions of invaders with one soldier, your medicine. You may have blocked the pain, however now you have to destroy the millions of invading germs with only one weapon. Conversely fresh fruits and vegetables, (especially organic) have many, many weapons to destroy invading germs. Now if you were to go into this battle with your own army of millions of soldiers, natural fruits and vegetables, you would have a much better chance of destroying the invading germs and making your immune system stronger in the process.

Fruits and vegetables during their growing process have to withstand invasion from many types of predators - temperature, insects, pollutants in the air - and in the process of doing this, they build a stronger immune system and resistance to disease which they pass on to whomever eats them. This is how we are able to be healed by them.

It is your body that does the healing, and our job is to create the best environment for it to do this.

Your body has all the tools necessary to repair itself, and it can get all the help it needs from eating natural substances. Your body can not only block the pain, it can also return to it's normal state just by eating and drinking natural substances.

Fruit rich in antioxidants helps repair the cells in your body, while olive oil, flax seed oil, and seafood, (specifically salmon), give your body the "good fat" that it needs to help decrease inflammation and reduce pain. Super foods, like wheat grass, algae and seaweed are packed with nutrients that can help you get well, and stay well.

So before you open that medicine cabinet, try visiting a health food store or an organic market and pick up some fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood. You will have less pain, heal faster and have much more energy. You know how all medicine has warning labels they are required to disclose, well here is my disclosure statement : You may have increased energy along with a much improved resistance to disease. You may experience little to no pain whatsoever, and your weight will be lower as a result of the change in diet. You can have a better quality of life." Can you "live" with these side effects? I think you can.

As always, stay positive and control your thoughts - because your thoughts become your reality.

Be kind, it costs little and is worth so much

Posted on Monday, June 23, 2008 by Douglas Powell

Today, right now, stop and search if you must, for someone to be kind to. It may be someone you live with, work with, or someone that you have never seen before that just happens to be in your presence at this particular moment. Extend yourself honestly, and purely, in a kind way, to that particular person, and your reward will be great. That person will appreciate your kind words and or gestures, and your life will be so much richer because of this.

We all understand the legal laws of the land we live in, if you do this or that, your consequence will be this or that. Well there are higher laws than these. If you throw a stone in the air, it will come down. That is the law of gravity. There is also the law of "you get what you give". Do you want people to be kind to you, well be kind to them first. It is that simple, and it absolutely works.

Whatever you want in this world you can have, be kind and give it first, and pay attention to circumstances in your life, and you will see people, many that you do not even know, being kind to you. Then you will be using this law of "giving what you get" to your benefit.

As always, stay positive, and control your thoughts, because your thoughts, become your reality.

Too sweet, or not to sweet

Posted on Thursday, June 12, 2008 by Douglas Powell

From the time we are born, we are introduced to the “sweet” taste. Our very first introduction to fuel is in the form of breast milk, or infant formula, which is sweet. Carbohydrates, fuel, the excess of which is stored in your body as fat, are necessary for life. What are carbohydrates, a source of fuel for your body. For any work that your body does, it needs fuel which comes in two forms, short chain, which is used first for bursts of energy, and long chain which is used for sustained energy. Think of the difference between sprinters, and marathon runners, needs for fuel. The sprinter needs fuel that will burn fast and immediately, for the short race, while the marathon runner needs a slower more consistent form of fuel, for the long run.

Because we have become accustomed to this “sweet” taste from infancy, for most of us, it is a natural part of our diet. Thanks to billion-dollar advertising, we feel we must have that sweet tasting drink, along with our meal. Or better yet, after that meal with the sweet drink, lets have an even sweeter desert. Here is the trifecta, lets have a sweetened vegetable with the meal, along with a sweet drink, followed by the even sweeter desert. Too sweet, any idea what that does to your insulin level? Ever notice how sluggish you are after you eat or drink those sweets. What does that baby do after a bottle of milk, sleep, and you as an adult get sleepy too, accept you have to continue to work, so fight the urge and continue on with your work. The common phrase for what you are experiencing is "spiking and crashing". Your body is reacting to the increase in carbohydrates by releasing insulin into your blood stream, which brings your blood sugar back to a normal level again. It is better for your body to have a natural, consistent sourced of carbohydrates, in your blood stream, for sustained energy throughout your day.

Now, all that's sweet, is not sugar? “Sweet” comes in many forms. The most common form of sweet, that many people relate to is the sugar that we add to our foods, however now there are many different types that can take it's place. We have a grocery store of synthetic sweeteners to choose from. Some of these create sweet sensations on your tongue, while having little to no caloric value. Some are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar. They are constantly doing studies on the effects of synthetic sweeteners to our bodies. National advertising campaigns make the choices seem viable, however natural is always better for your body.

Become holistic in your approach to eating. Have a glass of fresh, unsweetened, fruit juice with your morning meal. Taste the natural sweetness in fresh vegetables without adding any sweetener to them, and if you need a burst of energy, eat a piece of fruit. Natural is better, and gives our bodies beneficial nutrients to ward off illness and eliminates potential side effects caused by eating processed foods. You can live a life with fewer complications and more fulfillment's, by eating nature’s sugar, no substitutes.

If you want to cut down on the fat being stored in your body, cut back and clean up the source of fuel going into your body. It really is that simple. Make good choices today, and remain consistent, and you will see positive results.

As always, stay positive, and control your thoughts, because your thoughts, become your reality.

What you see is what you get

Posted on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 by Douglas Powell

When you look in the mirror, you see the outer expression of your inner thoughts. You see the words you have chosen to use in your life, come to life in-through your flesh. Don’t believe me? Then think about this.

Who do you see when you look into your mind. Is it the healthy, fit, successful person doing all the things that you desire and having all the wealth to go with it? Or do you see someone similar to yourself? You know, whether on TV or computer monitor, print ads or even on the radio, you see for very short moments throughout the days, weeks, months, and years, images of yourself. These images are being created by what you think, see, hear, and say; and they help form who you are. Well let’s just say, as in the case of many people, that you are not as happy as you wish to be with your present condition in life, and you would like to have more; then to have more, you need to change that picture in your head.

Everything starts with you. You control everything in your life. Now I realize that when things happen that you feel, at the time are “bad” for you, you may say, “I did not want this to happen” or maybe, “I did not want that to happen that way”. Well the way it happens may seem undesirable at the time, however, if you reflect on times past in your life, you may have to admit that the timing of things, even “bad” things seemed right. Let’s say that you were to think of the pictures in your head, days, weeks, months, and years before your present moment, then you could absolutely correlate the present picture with your past thoughts. Therefore if you want peace, joy, happiness, success, and prosperity in your life in the future, and that future can be in the next moment, then you need to see peace, joy, happiness, success, and prosperity in your mind NOW.

This simple philosophy is as old as time itself, and there is evidence of this in every period in history. Study the successful people, and you will see it. Research the top athletes and it is there. Watch an infant, they want something, they cry for attention, and they get what they want. This is a universal law and we know the law by heart as an infant, then we grow and are taught to doubt. We begin our lives learning from others what is "realistic" to expect for ourselves based, in part at least, on their beliefs and limitations. They say things like, "be like everyone else, because you can only be this type of person if you are, tall, short, black, white, overweight, underweight, and on and on. If you have been told all these things throughout your life, at all different stages and from all different types of people, you have probably gotten to some point where you believed it, and that’s when you began to doubt. Conversely, look at the people that were told they could do and be whatever they wanted, and they were told these things consistently throughout their lives. They understood and remained in that infant like state of wanting something and expecting to get it, and they probably got it. We could all do well to go back in our minds to a simpler time and truly grasp the principal of wanting something first and keeping that on our minds until we receive it. You can be one of the select few to find your way to happiness. Start in your head, because what you see is what you get.

Always be conscious of your thoughts. Choose positive words. Your thermometer for your thoughts is your feelings. Learn to be sensitive to your feelings, and to trust them. They will always guide you to the best solution for yourself. Some people call them instinct, hunch, Holy Spirit; what is important is that you learn to recognize them and to be guided by them. Do this and keep your thoughts positive and on what you want, and you will see in your life a change in a positive way. Behave more like that infant that cries expecting to get fed, and you will again expect what you want to show up in your life, and it will.

As always, stay positive, and control your thoughts, because your thoughts, become your reality.

Positive thoughts, create positive realities
